For the road ahead...

For many, North West Honda Super Centre has been our customer’s first call when it comes to getting started; answering those unknowns whether it’s learning to ride or finding the right machine to suit their needs. We also offer a full range of clothing and accessories, which can be a minefield when you are just getting started.

So, what are the top 10 reasons to buy a 125cc?

  1. Cost-effectiveness: 125cc motorcycles are generally more affordable than larger motorcycles and can be a great way to get into motorcycling without a huge financial commitment.
  2. Fuel efficiency: 125cc motorcycles have much better fuel efficiency than larger motorcycles, meaning you can go further on a tank of fuel. With the cost of living and rising fuel prices, the 125cc motorcycle has been triumphant! For £5 you can travel over 100 miles on a CB125F for example.
  3. Manoeuvrability: 125’s are much more lightweight and easier to handle than bigger bikes, making them great for winding roads and tight turns; easier for popping out and about.
  4. Versatility: 125’s can be used for commuting, touring, or even off-road riding, making them a great all-around bike.
  5. Low insurance rates: Many insurance companies offer discounted rates for 125cc motorcycles, making them an even more cost-effective option.
  6. Lower speed limits: 125cc motorcycles have lower maximum speed limits than larger capacity machines, making them safer for novice rider with a more progressive output.
  7. Parking: 125’s are much easier to park in small spaces, making them ideal for city riding and often are free to park!
  8. Low maintenance: 125cc motorcycles require less maintenance than larger motorcycles, saving you time and money. Honda also offer very affordable service plans for their full range of 125cc machines, tailored to suit your needs.
  9. Eco-friendly: 125’s are much more fuel-efficient and therefore more environmentally friendly than the bigger bikes. With an ever-increasing eco-consciousness, the 125cc market has been the choice for many.
  10. Fun! Riding a 125cc motorcycle can be a lot of fun, with plenty of thrills and excitement to be had on the open road!

OK, but how easy is it to get a CBT licence in the UK?

It is relatively easy to get a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) licence in the UK. The process requires you to pass a short course with a DVSA approved training school and then take a CBT test. The course takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days and the test can be done in a single day. After passing the course and test, you will receive your CBT licence, which will enable you to ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc on public roads (over the age of 17). It is important to note that you will still need to take a full motorcycle test to ride a bike over 125cc; this will be known as your A2 licence if you are under 24 years of age, or DAS (full category A licence) for 25+.

I think I can do this. What is the best learner motorbike in the UK?

The best learner motorbike in the UK really depends on your budget, skill level, and intended use. If you are looking for a reliable, affordable option, the Honda CB125F is a great choice. It has a 125cc engine, comfortable seating, and easy-to-use controls. If you are looking for something a bit lower with a bit more urban street-cred, then the Honda MSX125 Grom or Z125 Monkey dominate the younger market by the way of looks and customisable features. Ultimately, the best learner motorbike for you is the one that fits your budget, skills, and needs. Here at North West Honda Super Centre, we have our new rider specialist who will be happy to talk you through the best options for you, and build you the dream package.

I have a current CBT, what’s next for me?

Congratulations on passing your CBT test! If you are 19 years old, you will need to complete a Direct Access Scheme (DAS) course to be able to ride a larger bike. This course consists of a theory test, an off-road module, and two on-road modules. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a full motorcycle licence and will be able to ride a larger bike restricted to 47bhp. Honda offer many bikes that are known as ‘A2 compliant’, such as the CB500X, CMX Rebel 500, CB650R, CBR650R & CB300R; now for 2023, the brand new 755cc parallel twin powered machines, the Transalp and the Hornet are also a great choice! Make sure to do plenty of research and practice ahead of the course to ensure you are prepared. If you are over 24 years of age, you will still complete your DAS as above, however you will not be subject to any restriction on the size of the engine and you are able to look at any capacity within the whole Honda range. Our approved training centres, Practical Bikes Ltd to the north and RJH Training to the south are available all week to discuss the best course for you based on our current riding experience, and as Honda Approved facilities will mean as you take the step towards a bigger motorcycle can apply for your HSM Voucher which will entitle you to £500 off your new 500cc+ machine with North West Honda Super Centre!

I borrowed a helmet from a friend, but I really need to get some proper motorcycle clothing. What would you recommend?

When it comes to motorcycle clothing, it's important to find something that fits comfortably and is made of materials that are designed to protect you in the event of an accident. We would recommend looking for a motorcycle jacket and pants that are made of abrasion-resistant materials like leather or Kevlar. You should also invest in a pair of motorcycle boots and gloves that are designed to provide you with better protection while riding. Our dedicated clothing and service department has a wide range of clothing and protective wear, and have even put together some clothing ‘packs’ where you can save money and be sure you are safe whilst looking good!
